Training
Pip Unwin Classical Natural Horsemanship Trainer
I offer an exceptional new way of working in harmony with your horse. I have over forty years experience and am passionate about learning through our relationship with horses. I use my unique method of working, alongside you in a highly supportive way, in order to develop the best possible relationship with your horse.
My teaching allows both horse and handler to understand each other in order to open the lines of communication and to recognise how the human action inadvertently influences the response of the horse.
This is not Monty Roberts, clicker training or Parelli, but a whole new way of working in accord with horses, devised over forty years of experience.
Connection
I can take you to the level of connection with your horse that you have always dreamed of. I will ensure the time you spend with your horse is always a joy. I place no limit on where you can go with your horsemanship. Whatever you want to achieve, I will be able to support you and take your relationship with your horse to another dimension.
Communication
My teaching allows both horse and human to work together to deepen their understanding of each other. Opening the lines of communication and recognising how human actions inadvertently influence the response of the horse. There is no blame or punishment in Pippsway, just reward and a glorious sense of achievement for both parties.

Classical Natural Horsemanship is the true art of horsemanship which stems back thousands of years. It is the discipline of working with the horse in it’s own natural way of going, rather than a human designed training technique.
Pippsway is the horse’s way.
Pip's teaching is very rewarding
I offer a fantastic new way of communicating and learning with your horse. Teaching on your own horse, the aim is to allow horse and rider to open the lines of communication and work together with freedom from fear on both sides.
I believe that my teaching methods will not only improve your relationship with horses but also enhance relationships in other areas of your life. With the emphasis on harmony, a vital part of the method is gaining self awareness.
I have a particular interest in the horse’s natural balance and movement and how the rider influences the horse’s natural way of going. I understand that we often see wonderful exuberance combined with self control when we see horses free with their herds so I have developed riding techniques that allow the rider and horse to have freedom of expression whilst maintaining a calm and balanced posture.
My keen interest in maintaining freedom of movement means I also have a keen interest in all aspects of saddlery and tack and the influence that they have on the movement of the horse. My training will always take a holistic approach considering the bits, bridles, and saddles of every horse that comes to me and whether these are positively or negatively influencing the horse’s way of going. I am a trained saddle fitter.
Whether you have a much loved family pony, an eventer that has hit a brick wall in its training, an ex-racehorse, a nappy hack, an untouched youngster, or you just want to reach new goals and improve your horsemanship, I have the experience and skills to help both you and your horse reach your aspirations and dreams.

Trust, Empowerment and Liberation
One of the greatest gifts that training with me can give you is a deep trust in your own intuition. You will learn how to work out what your horse is communicating to you, and why, and how you can deal with it but it will be you who finds the answer! This empowers horse owners in a wholly new and liberating way. Following a consultation, I will give ongoing support over the phone or online.
"I offer a 1 on 1 service at your own home or livery yard with your own horse/s or alternatively you can bring your horse to my yard.
If it is a problem horse then I prefer to see you and your horse at your home first, to assess the situation.
I will advise you on behaviour problems as well as general horsemanship, riding (classical horsemanship) and care whether you are a complete novice or an experienced horse person.
Please call or email me for more details.”

Less Is More
One of the key elements of this training is self awareness. Once you begin to recognise where you are holding tension and fear you will be able to deal with it, therefore becoming more relaxed. You'll then be more comfortable around your horse and they around you. You'll find that you will save both energy and money because you're no longer looking outside yourself for "quick-fix" solutions as there will be a greater level of harmony in your relationship.
My teaching allows both horse and handler to understand each other in order to open the lines of communication and to recognise how the human action inadvertently influences the response of the horse.
There is no blame or punishment, just reward and a glorious sense of achievement for both. I teach all aspects of horsemanship from ground handling, tack fitting, confident riding at every level, stable and field management.
Only when we recognise how and where we are holding tension and fear can we learn to deal with it and become more relaxed around our horse. In turn, this means the horse becomes more relaxed. You will find you save time, energy and money because you are no longer looking outside yourself for a quick fix solution. Instead there will be a greater level of peace and contentment with horses and this can transfer to all your relationships, both human and equine.
Novices
If you have ever thought there should be more to riding lessons than walking nose to tail around a school and you are interested in learning to ride and communicate with horses through a gentle, holistic approach, then Pippsway is for you. This is not Monty Roberts, clicker training or Parelli, but a whole new way of working in accord with horses, devised over forty years of experience.

My teaching promotes creating a rewarding relationship with your horse through grooming, tacking up and handling your horse on the ground in ways that the horse understands and that strengthen your relationship. This method increases both the skills learned and the enjoyment of a session for both horse and rider. You will never be rushed or hurried at Pippsway. The learner sets the pace and is fully supported.
“I teach groundwork up to riding as most people, when they purchase their first horse, have only ever sat on a horse in riding lessons.
They are never taught the foundation of catching, leading, grooming, tacking up or ‘ground handling skills’. These skills take up the majority of your time spent with your horse so to understand why and what you are doing is so important to your whole relationship with your horse.
Groundwork is the foundation of your relationship.”
Intermediate
Do you feel stuck in your riding or bored with the same old routines? I can help intermediate riders realise their full potential and move their riding forward.

Individual sessions maximise the learning experience. I positively encourage questions and give riders the freedom to talk about experiences and goals.
Advanced
As an ex-competitor myself, I understand the commitment and drive it takes to ride at the top level. Using the same methods to get horse and rider working in harmony, I can increase the performance of both.
We know that successful riding is largely in the mind and I can teach you the techniques needed to achieve your best.
Children
Children and their ponies are very welcome at Pippsway.
Children are often more open and quicker to learn and I ensure that their early exposure to ponies is as positive as it can be. I have taught many children to ride and they have gone on to be confident and relaxed around horses. This is a skill that will stay with them for life.
Lesson Lengths
Minimum 30 minutes.
1 hour lesson/ hack.
2 hour morning or 2 hour afternoon lesson / hack.
4 hour all day lesson /hack with 1 hour lunch break.

If you require an overnight stay there is an excellent choice of B&B accommodation locally.
Home Visits
I am happy to visit clients and horses in their own homes. This is particularly useful for solving problems and assessing the situation in the usual home routine.
Using the same techniques and teaching methods as at the yard, I will work with you and your horse to improve communication. I will offer practical advice and help rebalance any miscommunication that may have occurred. I will offer you a different way of working with your horse to enhance your relationship.

Follow up telephone support is also offered as part of the service.
Backing
I am happy to take on young horses for backing and training. my quiet, calm methods give young horses plenty of time to develop the confidence they need to become useful companions.

Never forced, rushed or hurried, young horses can discover the joy of working with humans, as well as the other way around.
I encourage owners to be very much involved in the process.
Schooling
Horses that need furthering in their education, or re-schooling after a break from work can benefit from my approach. Never pushing or punishing the horse, I will ensure that horses brought to me for schooling will achieve their maximum potential and become sensible, responsive and safe partners for their riders.

“Several times a month Pip rides my horse for me. Both to correct mistakes he has learned from my less experienced riding and to bring him on in his training. It makes such a difference to how he goes! Pip working with him is as important to our success as her mentoring of me. I’m sure we wouldn’t have progressed as quickly as we have were she not looking after both of us!

I’m not experienced enough to ride out alone at the moment so it is wonderful to have Pip doing that with my horse for me, building his confidence ” Sam - Livery Client
